Canon EOS C300 Mark III & EOS R5 First Impressions

Canon has caught the attention of so many filmmakers and content creators with the announcement of two new cameras and a new cinema lens! Canon EOS C300 Mark III Digital Cinema Camera, Canon EOS R5, and the all-new Canon CINE-SERVO 25-250mm T2.95-3.95 EF lens, which are all great new additions to the arsenal of any video maker.

Canon’s Super 35mm Dual Gain Output (DGO) Sensor can handle 16 steps of Dynamic range and is compatible with Canon’s legendary Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus technology. The way Canon’s Super 35mm Dual Gain Output (DGO) Sensor works is that it will combine two pictures, one prioritizing saturation for bright areas and the other one prioritizing noise reduction for darker parts of the image which result in the crisp and clean final image.

Just like Canon EOS C500 Mark II, EOS C300 Mark III features Canon’s DIGIC DV7 image processor which is the brain and engine behind processing RAW information captured from the imaging sensor. DIGIC is also handling features like high frame rate recording, Dual Gain Output (DGO) Sensor, Dual Pixel Autofocus, Cinema Raw Light Recording, HDR (PQ) output, Electronic Image Stabilization, and proxy recording.

Canon EOS C300 Mark III also has support for both Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3 Gamma, Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus with support for Touch AF and Face Detection. The proxy recording is also another cool feature that will let you record Cinema RAW Light files to the internal CFexpress card and simultaneously an XF-AVC 2K 4:2:0 8-bit Proxy that will be recorded directly to an internal SD card for an easier editing process. The EOS C300 Mark III can also apply LUTs to Proxy recording. All in all, Canon EOS C300 Mark III is a very exciting proposition by Canon which has the potential to increase their penetration into the market and give content creators more options when it comes to deciding on the gear they want to use.

Canon EOS R5

It is almost 2 years since the introduction of Canon EOS R series mirrorless cameras and now they have come back strong with the introduction of Canon EOS R5. Canon’s new flagship mirrorless camera is sporting their latest Full-Frame CMOS image sensor in conjunction with their latest DIGIC processor. That is a lot of horsepowers packed into a mirrorless camera, but that’s exactly what EOS R5 needs for all the great stuff it is meant to do. Things like shooting uncropped 8K video internally at 30FPS and 4K at 120 FPS all in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log and using the H.265 codec. All the modes completely support Canon’s amazing Dual Pixel CMOS AF which in EOS R5, works hand in hand with their Subject Detection technology which is borrowed from Canon’s top of the line camera, EOS-1D X Mark III. Subject Detection in EOS R5 is capable of tracking Face, Head, and Eye of the subject in people detection mode, and also it can detect the whole body, face, or eyes of the animals like cats, dogs, and birds! These features are both available for shooting video or stills.

Canon EOS R5 is capable of a mechanical shutter speed up to 12 FPS and a silent shutter speed of 20 FPS! Mirrorless cameras man! They rock! EOS R5 is also the first-ever Canon camera utilizing a 5-Axis IBIS which can also work in conjunction with the Optical Image Stabilization available in Canon’s RF and EF lenses for an even more robust stabilization system. This can be very handy for shooting stills in low light conditions where you need to lower your shutter speed. Finally, EOS R5 has a dual card slot system with a super-high-speed CFexpress card slot and a UHS-II SD card slot. I could not ask for more!

Canon EOS R5 is scheduled to be available in the first half of 2020 and the price is still a mystery but the estimation is something around $3,500.

Canon CINE-SERVO 25-250mm T2.95-3.95 EF Lens

This new lens is here to fill the gap between Cine-Servo 17-20 and 50-1000 cinema lens line up of Canon. As the name implies, this new lens is capable of 10X magnification, and with the addition of an optical extender ad a 1.5X to that which will increase the magnification to 375mm. For cameras equipped with Super35mm CMOS sensors, like the Canon EOS C300 Mark III we talked about earlier, this lens can produce the best 4K picture possible over the entire focal range using Canon’s renowned color science. The lens comes in both EF-mount protocol and PL Mount protocol which supports the industry-standard Cooke/i technology. Also for all you Bokeh enthusiasts out there looking for beautiful circular blurring in out-of-focus regions, first of all, hi and nice to meet you, and second, Canon CINE-SERVO 25-250mm has 11 blades for its Iris which means amazing Bokeh effect for your beloved shots!

Finally, let’s talk about the Servo part of the Canon CINE-SERVO 25-250mm lens! The servo drive on this lens comes with an LCD display for easier access to functions and also the ability to save user settings. The toggle switch on the drive unit gives the operator easy navigation through features like the ability to achieve zoom speeds between 0.5 to 300 seconds.
